Ne-Yo
By Mollie Rose
R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo performed at ‘The Fifth’ in South Beach for the third annual Hennessy Artistry Concert series. Miami’s own Fat Joe started off the show and the crowd loved it. Guests also enjoyed a variety of Hennessy’s signature cocktails all night long.
How did you get involved with the Hennessy Artistry Concert?
I’ve worked with them in the past and they told me that they wanted the main thing this time around to be diversity and diversity is my bag. I’m the kind of guy that will write a song for Mary J. Blige, turn around and write a song for Michael Bolton, then turn around again and do a song for Rihanna. So they saw the diversity in me and they figured who better to curate something that’s supposed to be diverse, then someone as diverse as myself.
How did you choose the artists that were going to perform?
First, I figured out where we were going to be and then I wanted to get people that made the most sense in these areas. Fat Joe is like a hometown hero over here. So it just made perfect sense for him to do this with me. We’re gonna do it like that everywhere we go. It’s not gonna be just hip-hop. We did LL Cool J in L.A. We did Fat Joe here. We’re gonna do some rock bands, some country music. We’re gonna do everything. We’re gonna keep it diverse and for everybody.
How much of an influence did you have on the design of the evening?
I didn’t have much, to be honest. Hennessy knows what they’re doing. So I didn’t have too much to do with that part of it.
We heard you had something to do with the selection of the servers’ outfits?
I needed something classy yet sexy. So I threw my ideas out there, they (Hennessy) threw their ideas out there and we came up with it together.
What have you been doing since you’ve been in Miami?
Honestly, not much because I just got here today.
How long are you in town for?
I think I leave tomorrow, actually. One of the things about the way that I travel, I don’t really get to do too much of anything. I don’t get to hang out that much. After the show, I think were all just gonna let this rock. Grab your favorite Hennessy drink and just hang out.
Your song Miss Independent was a huge hit, have you found Miss Independent yet?
Not yet, but I am looking. I know you’re out there.
When you come to Miami, what are your favorite hot spots?
When I’m in Miami, normally it’s B.E.D., Mansion, and the pool at the Gansevoort on the rooftop, or any bed period. Not the club B.E.D. but the bed. I do a lot of (sleeping) or the beach. You can’t go wrong with the beach.
What do you love most about Miami?
The weather, the vibe, and the women.
