Velvet underground: Nov 28-Dec 4
By Lesley Abravanel
There's plenty to do this week that has nothing to do with zillion-dollar paintings of dog doody and sculptures of dead people.
Consider, for example, Anise Waterfront Taverna, brought to us by the folks formerly at Ouzo's, whose unfortunate and untimely demise can be partially blamed on the brutal construction going on in the Purdy Avenue area of South Beach. But rather than dwelling on the negative, we focus on the positive, and there are many here, including that resplendently gritty waterfront location on the Little Miami River. In addition to Greek favorites and tons of ouzo, there's also free parking and a funky crowd of arty types, foodies and degenerates looking for a taste of Mykonos in the heart of Miami's urban jungle.
Now that Thanksgiving is over, what better way to show off how much you ate than at Alex Omes, Emi Guerra and Louis Puig's 2008 Thanksgiving Pool and Beach Party on Friday, featuring DJ Erick Morillo spinning an extended sunset set along with Kaskade, Mark Knight, Kurd Maverick, Oscar G, Cedric Gervais, Patrick M, Lazardi and Roland at The Surfcomber Hotel from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Tickets are $35 if you get there before 2 p.m. and are available at www.wantickets.com or at the door.
Now that all the opening dazzle dust has settled over at the Fontainebleau, it's time to test your luck at the doors of the resort's two new hot spots, LIV and Blade, where on Saturday nights, a laundry list of locals joins forces in promoting both, starting with poolside cocktails at Blade at 9 p.m. and then dancing and debauchery at LIV.
Speaking of living it up, News Cafe, the original bastion of South Beach cafe society, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a huge party on the 800 block of Ocean Drive on Tuesday. Conveniently, News founder and owner and catalyst to the late '80s, early '90s South Beach renaissance, Mark Soyka, will mark his own birthday, his 65th, with the announcement of a 10-year-renewal of the News lease. The party will go from 6-10 p.m. with mistress of ceremonies Elaine Lancaster, the sounds of Kimona's Cabaret Quintet with Mad Romance's Rick Harris on the piano, the Spam All-Stars and a celebratory culmination of a major fireworks display. Congrats to Soyka for keeping the News fresh and current.
Also pretty current, if not necessarily always relevant, is the new and improved Karu & Y, which seems to be spending a bailout amount of money on advertising with frequently changing billboards on 95 reflecting the latest in its celebrity appearances. And while Brody Jenner and Aubrey O'Day may have stopped traffic for a few, we were most impressed by the e-mail touting design legend Jean Paul Gaultier, but were immediately dejected when we found out he wasn't actually going to be there, but instead, his clothing will, tonight, in a fashion showcase. On Saturday night, a different scene entirely, this time, with Good Charlotte's Joel Madden flexing his celeb muscles on the turntables with a DJ set. Don't kill yourself on the road trying to get the RSVP number. Here it is: 305-403-7850.
Over at Heathrow Lounge tonight, Grey Goose sponsors a benefit for the fifth annual Alan R. Epstein Reach for the Stars Scholarship Fund, which provides education financing for deserving and needy South Florida high school seniors. A $40 suggested donation gets you a gold star and free cocktails from 10-midnight.
And now, let the Basel dazzle begin.
